God delivers His servants, in whom He sees zeal and divine desire, to the same chastening unto which He delivered His Only-begotten Son. To those He foresees will reach great perfection, He allows harsher manifestations of His chastening. During the martyric affliction of the second period: the extreme trial of abandonment by God, the Christian is initiated into the mystery of the Cross; he comes to know Christ in His infinite depth. And Christ grants the grace to whomsoever is like Him in His descent to also resemble Him in His ascent. He bestows upon him the grace of enlargement to embrace both heaven and earth in his heart. God calls man to a wondrous life. The knowledge of the rough and difficult path, as well as its luminous end, imparts wisdom to the mind whilst also begetting inspiration and trust in the heart. It strengthens man to place ‘himself and all others and his whole life’ into the holy hands of Almighty Jesus. He holds him fast so that he does not deviate from his purpose, which is to sow immortality and eternity as long as he lives and moves on the earth. He helps him to become a partaker of the much-desired ‘better resurrection’ in the boundless ages to come.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, ‘being made a curse for us’. As the Lamb without blemish and without spot, the Lord did not save us by His omnipotence, but by His humble love, making Himself vulnerable unto death, so that at the end of His earthly life nothing was more evident in His own Flesh than this curse, wherewith ‘He clothed Himself like as with His garment’. Thus, Christ entered into His rest only when He was consumed by the zeal for His house, ‘Whose house are we’.

For God’s elect, there is no other way to express their gratitude to the Lord, except through extreme tribulations and sufferings, because the love revealed to them is extreme, boundless and absolute, love ‘to the end’. Bearing the judgment of God, the saints make themselves last in the depths of their humility, and are thus received by Him Who is First, by Jesus, the Giver of Life.

God calls man to a wondrous life. Knowledge of the rough and arduous way, but also of its luminous end, gives wisdom to the mind while begetting inspiration and confidence. It takes many trials to break open man’s heart so that it can be enlarged to accommodate the glorious Spirit of God. Spiritual rebirth does not take place in the bliss of the first grace, but after a painful struggle in the furnace of temptations when man convinces God that he indeed belongs to Him, whether he lives or dies.
