eBook: Echoes of the Spirit

$20.00

Eternal life,’ as the Lord Himself declares, is the knowledge of the true God (John 17:3). Yet His life is infinite, and we, in our weakness, whenever He reveals Himself to us, can only grasp the smallest aspect of it. This is why divine Providence has established feasts throughout the year as places where we meet the Lord, as windows that reveal to us the ‘great and wondrous’ things of our God and lead us into His Presence.
The feasts were given to us to remember the blessings we have received from God, to thank Him, and entreat Him to succour us on the path of the Cross that leads to salvation. They were given to us to combat the devastation of oblivion and the abomination of ingratitude. The feasts of the Church are not a theatrical re-enactment but a prayerful commemoration. Preparation for each feast with humble thanksgiving and repentance brings grace, which makes us contemporaries of eternal events in the Holy Spirit.

If the Holy Spirit does not reveal to man the wondrous, sweet, holy, and beloved form of Jesus, how can he cry out to Him for he ‘hath not yet seen Him neither known Him’? If the Holy Spirit does not come to dwell in the heart and gather there all man’s desire, how can he pray without ceasing? All the gifts of the Holy Spirit are to make us one Body with the Lord, and that Body is bound by a spirit and that spirit is the Lord’s incorruptible love.

At Pentecost, ‘The sign of fiery tongues is given for all.’ It is by signs that God has delivered His revelation of the truth to men. All the events in the life of Christ are ‘signs’ of God. He left us the example of His way from the vale of tears, the earth, and the dark pits of the deepest hell to the luminous glory of the Heaven of Heavens. This is the awesome mystery into which we are initiated through the great Feasts of the Nativity, Theophany, the Transfiguration, the Resurrection and the last great feast of Pentecost. By preparing for each Feast with humble thanksgiving, and undergoing an earthquake of repentance, we enter His living presence and hear the strange and paradoxical echoes of the Spirit in our heart. By the grace of the Feast, a little ‘door’ opens for us, and we become contemporaries of eternal events.
