The fear of God becomes a word of spiritual edification, divine consolation, and strength. A characteristic example is that of the Apostle Paul, who confessed to the Corinthians: ‘And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.’ It is the fear of God that made the Apostle Paul a great preacher.

Excerpts (1)

When man accepts his bodily affliction blessing God and surrendering to His will, then pain itself becomes a source of grace. And if he gives thanks to God even when his life is threatened by illness or death, he proves that his faith is stronger than death, and in return, he receives the immense grace of the saints.

Salvation has come to us through the suffering and death of Christ upon the Cross and it begins to work in us when we too reach the threshold of death in our desire to attain it. Then God counts us worthy of the fulness of His grace and sets our feet upon the path of the saints, which is the path of Christ. Saint Paul says: ‘Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.’ Thus, suffering may be transformed into a positive source of energy, enabling man to enter the presence of God and to receive from Him all that is His.
