This book presents the wall paintings located in a small refectory of our Monastery. The murals depict the life of St Silouan the Athonite, the spiritual father of Saint Sophrony, founder of the community. After the death of his spiritual director, Father Sophrony wrote a book, St Silouan the Athonite, detailing the life of the saint and including his writings. The wall paintings, laid out in clockwise order, follow the order of the book and present significant moments in the saint’s life. The inscriptions on the wall paintings, with some clarifying additions, comprise the text of this book.

The murals were done by members of the community in the summer of 2001. The technique used was fresco, painted on fresh lime plaster applied daily in small sections by specialist plasterer. Finishing touches were made in egg tempera. A brief description of the life of St Silouan is presented at the end of this book.

Were it possible I would pray everyone out of hell, and only then would my soul be easy and rejoice.

Icons from Saint Silouan’s life. A brief description of his Life (his Life condensed, illumined by otherworldly icons).
My problem is old age. The letters are small and though my glasses do the jobs, my arms were not long enough. Maybe my eyes were tired? My son decades ago said I am a dinosaur (him as provocative teenager). Finally, I agree. I enjoyed the text in so far I could read it (very good synopsis) and icons. If you ever are exhausted, depleted and need a spiritual Life to read – follow Saint Silouan’s icons. It’ll inspire without reading a book. But you can read it, too.
(Did I mention the print is in fine letters?)
