Elder Silas (1866-1938) was born in a peasant family in the Russian countryside. He was strong and helpful since childhood. After completing his military service, he left home and went to the Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos. On Mount Athos, the elder pursued God’s teachings persistently and prayed to the Lord all his life. For 46 years, he always lived a humble life as an ordinary monk, and finally passed away quietly. Elder Silas was famous for his piety and persistence in the Orthodox faith. His life and his teachings on “confession”, “humility”, “grace and freedom”, “love enemies”, “how to pray”, “keep your sanity in hell and don’t despair”, etc., demonstrated the essence of Orthodox spirituality. After his death, he was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1987 and by the Patriarchate of Moscow in 1992.
