Simeon Ivanovici Antonov s-a născut în anul 1866, în gubernia Tambov din Rusia. A fost un simplu țăran, fără prea multă carte. În 1892, după terminarea stagiului militar, a plecat la Muntele Athos, Grădina Maicii Domnului, intrând în mănăstirea rusească închinată Sfântului Mare Mucenic Pantelimon, în care trăiau la acea vreme 2000 de monahi.
